General Conditions for car rental in Guatemala


At time of rental, when picking-up a car, AVIS customers may choose to accept or to decline optional coverage or insurance by checking into the corresponding box (accept or reject). Once the contract is signed and coverage/insurance is accepted, it will not be refundable.

• Driver’s License/Passport:
At the moment the Rental Agreement is opened, a valid Driver´s License and the driver´s passport must be presented. The License should have been issued at the country of origin. In those cases where an International Driver´s License is presented, it must be presented with the Driver´s License of the country of origin of the driver and the driver´s passport. International Driving Licence together with the Driving License of the country of origin.
• Driver’s License Requirements:
Valid driver's license from country of residence is required. International driving license is required only for countries with non-Roman alphabet. International driving license is a translation only.
• Credit Card:
An International credit card accepted by AVIS will be required at the time you collect your vehicle; said credit card will be blocked to be used as a guarantee and to cover any extra charge not included in the Voucher, such as, gas, insurance deductible, etc. Se aplicará una retención adicional en la tarjeta de pago. La retención será por el costo de alquiler estimado, más 20 por ciento.
• Debit Cards:
Debit cards are not accepted.
• Additional drivers: All additional drivers must meet the same minimum age and driver's license requirements as the renter. All additional drivers must be present at time of pick-up of the rental vehicle.
The additional driver fee is USD 10.00 per day for each additional driver.  
Avis and Avis licensees reserve the right to refuse any request for rental including requests for  persons under age, persons not in possession of a recognized full and valid driver's license, persons unable to satisfy credit or cash requirements, or  persons who, in the opinion of Avis, constitute a risk.

Insurances and Coverages

• Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Waiver of responsibility in case of loss or damage to the rental car, with a deductible. Coverage does not cover loss or theft of accessories. With CDW, in the event of theft or damage to the Avis car, the renter will be responsible for a deductible that depends on the rented car group. An official report issued by the police must be shown in order to apply this coverage. The renter will be responsible for the full cost of the damage if the car is driven in violation of the rental agreement, is abused or driven recklessly or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Some rates include this coverage. 
If CDW is declined, ALI is mandatory and the customer may be responsible for up to the full value of the vehicle.  

• PAI – Personal Accident Insurance
Avis PAI covers medical assistance and expenses in case of illness and/or accident of the renter of the Avis vehicle. Please verify at time of reservation the scope and limitations of this coverage.
One Way Rentals
Avis allows renters to return the car in a different Avis location from where it was picked-up, always within Guatemala, at no additional cost. Subject to availability at time of booking. For more information:

Travel into other countries

A car rented in Guatemala may cross the borders into Costa Rica or Mexico, as long as the car is returned in Guatemala. It may also cross the border into Belize, El Salvador, Honduras or Nicaragua. Previous authorization is required, it must be requested at the AVIS counter at the time of pick-up.

Travel into Mexico
To cross the border into Mexico the client must purchase insurance at the Mexican border for approximately USD 100.00 plus Tax, plus the Border Crossing Permit (USD 500.00 plus Tax).

Travel into Belize
A Border Crossing Permit is required. The Border Crossing Permit into Belize is USD 200.00 plus Tax and it's issued at the Avis counter at the time of pick-up.

Travel into El Salvador, Honduras or Nicaragua
A Border Crossing Permit is required. The Border Crossing Permit into these countries is USD 30.00 plus Tax and it's issued at the Avis counter at the time of pick-up.
